In diverticular disease, small bulges or pockets (diverticula) develop in the lining of the intestine. Diverticulitis is when these pockets become inflamed or infected. While diverticular disease is often asymptomatic, diverticulitis can lead to abdominal pain, fever, changes in bowel habits, and more.

Causes and Risk Factors of Diverticulitis
– Diet: Low fibre and low water intake may increase the risk
– Age: Risk increases as we age
– Obesity: Being overweight contributes to the likelihood of developing diverticulitis.
– Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity is a contributing factor.
– Smoking: Associated with a higher incidence of diverticulitis.
How can a nutritional therapist help
By helping the client to understand diverticulitis and the triggers and flare ups and adjusting diet and lifestyle for prevention and management of further infections. By recognizing early symptoms and adopting a fibre-rich and optimal diet specific to you, individuals can reduce their risk of reoccurrence. Stress is also key to manage in preventing further infections as is introducing regular physical activity.
